Attack of the SSRP box!

September 22nd, 2004

The camera found, I now have pictures to show you! Oh, and I forgot – my Colinette millpack from the UK came, and its gorgeous. It’s full of my favorite greens.

Now, on to the pictures.

First, here are two pictures that show what I didn’t take.

There is definately yarn in those two piles that you can’t see. Muahahahaha. Including some lovely angora that I would have napped, if it hadn’t been pink. Oh, pink. How I hate thee.

Now, here’s what I took. I’ll inventory it at the end.

And, of course, what I put in return.

Now, here’s what I took out, with what I put in return.

What I Took What I Put Back In
3 sks Rowan Kidsilk Haze 7 sks Debbie Bliss Merino Aran
Linen Drape Rowan Kit (4 sks) 9 sks Reynolds Duet
1 sk Colinette DK 1+ sks Brown Sheep Prairie Silks, 2 sks Grignasco Skipper
6 sks Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride Bulky 10 sks Berella Banff
1 knit a dozen socks pamphlet, 2 sks regia sock yarn 5 sks Classic Elite Imagine

I tried really hard to do equal or better trades, and to make sure I was putting snob worthy yarn back in. I’m a little worried that the Berella Banff isn’t quite as snobby as Brown Sheep, but its a very nice 100% Merino Wool superwash yarn. The Reynolds Duet is a 86% wool, 14% alpaca, I believe, and the color is great.

I also threw in, just to sweeten things up a bit, some wool in the woods lace weight yarn and some NKI cotton/wool blend yarn that is very nice. It’s each about a skein and a half, but that’s enough for a little bag, or a scarf, or whatever.

Anyways, if you think I’ve accidentally shafted anyone, please tell me. I really did put a ton of thought into it.

I have fallen down.

September 22nd, 2004

Well, on my duty as Yarn Tempress.

Herrschners is having its Fall Yarn Sale. I didn’t see much that made me excited – lots of bernat and pattons and red heart, but they do have Debbie Bliss Silk Cotton Aran (did anyone buy that at full price?), Denim Aran, Merino Aran, and Merino Chunky.

This sale brings up another point.

Who in the hell buys this yarn?

It’s ugly. Butt Ugly. And I see it all the time on Herrschner’s site. For some reason, it bug me more than anything by Red Heart.

I was tempted by the Merino Aran, but then I reminded myself that I just put all 7 balls I had into the SSRP box in exchange for 3 balls of kidsilk haze. Does that sound like a fair trade?

Good News!

September 22nd, 2004

I found my digital camera this morning. If you read my personal blog, you’ll have seen that I thought I had lost it. I took it apple picking, and it just seemed to have disappeared.

This morning, I was cleaning out my purse, and pulled out some papers. And there was my camera! It’s small and thin, it and ended up hidden between the papers and the side of my purse.

Not that this means I have any pictures for you. But, coming soon will be pictures of the SSRP beta box, progress on my shawl, and probably something random lying around the house. But not a dead mouse. That’s gross. Although, my cats have become mighty mouse hunters. It’s gross.

I was a bit surprised at the contents of the SSRP box – I was expecting larger lots. The box seemed to start out with larger lots, but had turned into a box with lots of smaller lots, which I thought was sort of not the point. But, I still found some goodies, and I tried to put some larger lots back into the box of fairly snob-worthy yarn. But, I’ll post more on that tomorrow. However, it means that I’ll have at least two large yarn lots to put up on eBay, as soon as I get around to it. Mainly, one is a cute Dale kit – its a very long cardigan, and will not look good on me, and the other is 20 balls of Rowan Denim. I can’t imagine using the Rowan Denim – I just don’t like knitting with cotton that much. No, I’m not sure why I bought it. :)

This weekend, I did go back to Knitsche to pick up more of the Crystal Palace Shimmer for my sister’s shawl. They had four balls left in the same color, so I grabbed all four. I don’t think I’ll need that many, but I can make a killer fringe out of the rest.

Undiscovered Starmore

September 17th, 2004

The boyfriend keeps giggling at me for my yarn related foibles.

The first giggle? He found out that I purchased the February 1983 issue of The Scots Magazine.

Why would I do such a thing? Because it has an article on Alice Starmore. I found it when I was bored one day and doing a Starmore search on one of the big used book sites.

It’s from the Scandavian Knitting time period.

Okay, I’ll admit that its a bit silly. But, it was only 3 dollars.

Also, it allowed me to find The Scots Magazine website, which includes recipes. I think I’m going to try Glenmorangie Chocolate Mousse.

Tonight, I’m heading to Monica’s house for knitting. I am bringing cookies, and my current project:

Except, it doesn’t look a lot like that. The black purl rows are actually the same color as the rest of the work, with a black strand of very very short fur yarn poking out. It’s very subtle, and doesn’t actually look like a stole that would go with a very very bad bridesmaid dress. It’s a deep plum purple with sparkles. Dammit. It is. :) I do like how its turning out, but I”ll need to pick up some more yarn tomorrow in Downers Grove. That bit is about one and 2/3rds balls, and I only bought four. Doh.

Oh, and the other bf giggling incident came when I told him that the SSRP box is waiting in the post office, and that I thought we should leave for home early so we could be home before 6pm. He convinced me that I could wait to get it until tomorrow. I can’t wait!

Colinette!

September 15th, 2004

Julianne, who is my new bestest friend, is currently in the UK. She went to the Colinette Mill Shop. After I begged, she bought me one of their mill packs in lovely green shades. She even took a great picture of it for me, so I could see the labels!

I have 10 skeins total – one each of zanziba, wigwam, chrysalis, prism, skye, isis, point 5, one zero, mohair and tagliatelli.

I think I’m going to do something modular and make a lap blanket out of it. Something with blocks and stripes.

I did try to get a new picture of my mom’s sweater with better detail, but failed. I do really like it – I might make one like it for me, but not necessarily the same pattern.

I also took a picture of my sister’s shawl, but it came out really badly – the dark plum purple turned to royal blue. On the purl rows, I’m adding in the sparkle yarn, which is this tiny fur yarn. It’s subtle, but it adds a bit of texture, and is kind of neat. Which was not apparant from the pictures I took. I’ll try again in natural light, and actually post details.
