We’re Still Knitting Ugly!

I had an odd impulse to knit something super easy this weekend.  I had a skein of Fiesta Yarns Flirt thanks to a gift bag Arcadia Knitting gave out at the blogger get together.  Now, I’m not a novelty yarn person.   But, as novelty yarn went, this felt very nice, and heck it was free.

Unfortunately, it knit up a bit ugly.   I made Hunter pose with it.

Once I dropped him in it, he sort of liked it.  He agreed to a sexy back shot.

So, I got to thinking.  I have no one to give this scarf too.  I’m not going to wear it.  So, contest time!

Leave a comment describing someone who “deserves” the scarf of ugliness.   And no currying favor by describing my ex.  :)  I want to hear nasty, evil details of why someone should have this scarf inflicted on them.

Anyways, the winner wins the scarf of ugliness, and something pretty out of my stash.

I think the cat should get it!

Well, I should get it, because I complained about the “free” yarn that I got at Arcadia. So, you could say that I “looked a gift horse in the mouth,” whatever that means.

My MIL deserves this scarf and it’s not because she is a wretch or anything like that because she is so nice. She deserves it because it would be a treasured item in her wardrobe, a serious flaw on her part. Seriously, take a peek at my yahoo photo albums and see all the mobius’ I have made her, I have lost count. She loves hairy scarves and as if to torture me…the handpainted Artisan merino laceweight Fiddlesticks triangular scarf I labored over for her 70th birthday has become a hair net basically to keep her big hairdo in place from the wind. She also treasures that cheap “magic scarf” that is basically a machine knit tube of hair that can be worn in any one of the fabulous styling options. Need I go on…?

I believe my dear friend Melissa deserves the scarf of ugliness, mostly because I also believe she deserves something pretty from your stash. :)

She is my knitting student, and she is SO HARD on herself for all her mistakes and imperfections. She thinks all her projects are ugly and poorly made, and it is just not true. Owning the scarf of ugliness would give her a great example of how ugly knitting can really get. ;)

My Aunt Marg made me and my sister scarves out of that yarn. Ariel got the color you used and I got what looks like the Iris colorway. It does feel really nice for novelty yarn, but I just can’t bring myself to wear it.

I think my ex deserves the scarf. We’re trying to be “friends” now, and I like to give him random pieces of crap and say that they’re “friendship” whatevers, and if he throws it away he’s not really my friend. It started with tying bits of yarn around his wrists and calling them friendship bracelets, and has progressed to swatches and beer labels. A floofy scarf is the next logical progression.

Hunter is way too sexy for that scarf. And I’m glad you decided to name him Hunter.

  7. Laurel Says:

I think George W. Bush should be the recipient of your scarf. Do I really need to describe why?

  8. Amy Says:

Everything looks better on a cat.

  9. Kathy Says:

I guess I can’t play because I think it is really pretty! If you inflicted it on me I would actually wear it. Which I guess means you’d have to see it….which means I probably don’t win :-(

It’s like an Easter basket in scarf form!

  10. Lisa Says:

I think the cat should get it too!

By the way, “free” novelty yarns always look a little bit better if you knit them double with a normal worsted weight, albeit a cheap acrylic “yarn”. This makes it a suitable gift for children who like poofy things in garish colors. :-) I am specifically refering to my 5YO niece who wears so much orange that she looks like a traffic cone.

Anyway! The Island of Misfit Patterns is a BRILLIANT idea, a perfect name, and guaranteed to land you all on the famous knitbloggers map once and for all. Congratulations.

    Gail,
I totally miss your podcast, and all your honest reviews. I do hope you will come back! Would love to hear your reviews on differnent yarns. do take care of your self! your friend, Ines

  12. Pam from CT Says:

Give it to the ex…with bad wishes. Anyway, are you done with podcasting? I was waiting for the final review on Knitting Nature.

  13. Chris Says:

I should get it because there is a woman in my former knit group who is so nasty and hard to get along with. I would love to give it to her. She thinks she can tell us where to buy our yarn and gets bent out of shape when we go our own way. Evidently thinks she “owns” the group. So we left and went somewhere else. Only someone who knits can understand the ugliness of it and that it wouldn’t really be a “gift”.

  14. tracy Says:

My Brother deserves it. Not only would it look insane on him but he really takes the cake (IMHO) for asking his sister (moi) to knit something for his new baby and after knitting for miles on a very large for a baby afghan afghan (in fingering weight), he never said thank you. Ahem.

[…] Finally, the contest for the ugly scarf is still open through the weekend.   The Judge,  also known as The Judgerino, will not be available until next week.   The orginal Judge, Aimee the Sis, actually knows one of the contestants, I decided to torture someone else with the task. […]
